ARTIST STATEMENT:
Growing up in Utah gave me a keen awareness and appreciation for the beauty and variety of the natural world; surreal red rock deserts, stately mountains and wide-open rural expanses rendered even more beautiful during the glorious light of late afternoon sun. Decades later I am still in awe of the majestic and sometimes stark beauty of the West.
I approach the canvas from that place of awe, allowing myself to be utterly absorbed by the process. Through a more intuitive than technical approach I seek to convey the moment and spirit of a landscape rather than the infinite details.
The limitless combinations of color, texture and composition available to the artist share a kinship with nature. I use the tools of the artist to express my vision of the natural world and to create visual pleasure. And in the end, I hope to have also captured the spirit of the West.
